postgres slowness

Hello!
I'm currently experiencing undesirable slowness when using Minivend to
access a postgres database, and I'm wondering if others have also run
into this issue and dealt with it successfully.
For example, To load the tiny Simple store database from postgres using
the "browse" command, it takes about 15 seconds (with plenty of system
resources available), where it's almost instanteous under the flat file
scheme. (about 10 times as slow)
