[ic] how do i refer to the current page using [area] or [page] tags?

Perhaps you need something like [env REQUEST_URI].

I stand corrected about @@MV_PAGE@@ being [var MV_PAGE 1] and
@_MV_PAGE_@ being [var MV_PAGE 2], by the way. :-)
