Do you mean the Perl length() function?
my $str = 'How long is a piece of string?';
my $len = length($str);
$len would then be 30, which finally provides an answer to this
age-old question. :-)
You could make a UserTag or Filter out of that sort of thing, or
just use it directly in a [calc].
