[ic] setting payment module error messages

Is there any way for a payment module to explicitly set the text of an
error message? For instance, I'd like the error message that's displayed
upon a failed credit card charge to be more descriptive than:

There were errors in your last submission:
     (trustcommerce): Charge operation 'trustcommerce' failed.

However, if I try setting the $result{MErrMsg} variable within the
payment module when something goes wrong, that has no effect on the
actual error message. Any ideas would be appreciated.
