[ic] Category Issue

I have entered items, and put them into categories, and when displaying
the items from the admin section you can clearly see the categories.
Once I select advanced search there are no categories in the drop down
list to select from which is part of an issue, and secondly when I cross
sell and tell it a category the only way to make it work is putting a
specific item, it just doesn't pull the categories.

So basically I need some help in understanding how to repair this...
