Why would the following not work?

[if subtotal >~ 50]
your subtotal is over $50.00
[/if]

or

[if subtotal > 50]
your subtotal is over $50.00
[/if]

or

[if subtotal gt 50]
your subtotal is over $50.00
[/if]

I am stumped how to compare [subtotal] in shipping page (I get a value for
[subtotal]) in multi page checkout.
