Ahem..../path/to/file.pdf *is* not the same as 
...http://www.yourdomain.com/path/to/file.pdf! See you it?

For example:

First case:

a)

/path-to-my-own-web-space/my-htdocs-dir/index.html

b)

You can see a) with

http://www.mydomain.com
or
http://www.mydomain.com/index.html

and that is not the same like

/path-to-my-own-web-space/my-htdocs-dir/index.html as a URL in your browser.
