I think that what you are looking for is the /$catalogroot/etc/ .. Take a
look at the pages that are mail_receipt and report.

We have done this between two systems (literally across the country) using a
usertag that posted an XML post to a remote server, and then listened for
the appropriate response. It worked very well.
