Just battled this one myself :)
Make sure that your permissions on /var/spool/clientmqueue is correct.
Mine (debian-default, I think) was root.root 755 changing it to
root.mail 775 did the job.
(Or, since your mail-user has the root-grp, just adding 775 might do
it.)
