Problem solved!
there are 3 basic things that you should keep in mind when working with 
additional modifiers

1) Define the Modifier in catalog.cfg
UseModifier   size color partnumber

2) Assign the modifier value Modifier
  <A HREF="[area href=ord/basket form="mv_order_item=[item-code]
                                         mv_order_partnumber=100-5202165-013215
                                         mv_action=refresh"]">
                 or
         <input type="text" name="mv_order_partnumber" value="">

3) reference the modifier in any future displays
for example if in the basket.html
            <input type=hidden name="[modifier-name partnumber]" 
value="[item-modifier partnumber]">
so that interchange knows that you are refering to this particular item 
with this particular modifier value
when ever you want to display the modifier information
         <b>[item-modifier partnumber]</b>
