You need to use [area ...] tag thusly=>
<a href="[area [item-field pdf]]"><font __FFACE__ size="1"
>color="#FF0000"><b>schematic</b></font></a>
or better, create a pdf directory in catalog/pages and link as:
<a href="[area pdf/[item-field pdf]]"><font __FFACE__ size="1"
>color="#FF0000"><b>schematic</b></font></a>
Store '.pdf' file extensions in the database field itself.
