[mv] mv_searchspec = scratch in [more-list]

I am running a search from a form, then sending the results into a
[more-list] tag.
I am trying to set a scratch variable equal to mv_searchspec from the
form.  I need to insert the scratch variable into an image html tag for
use as a category header.  This works on the first page of the
[more-list], but not on subsequent ones.  I am running mv3.11.  Here's
my code to set the scratch:

[if type=value term=mv_searchspec]
[then]
[set name="gnum" interpolate=1][value mv_searchspec][/set]
[/then]
[else]
[set name="gnum" interpolate=1][scratch gnum][/set]
[/else]
[/if]

Do scratch variables get reset/undefined each time the [more-list] is
built?  When/why is gnum being deleted?
