i tried to install MV4 alpha 8 on FreeBSD 3.4 today. there must be a typo
somewhere, because the bin dir goes under /usr/minivend/bin where all other
files goes under /usr/local/minivend/...

i plyed around a little bit with 4.0 and found the following:
my testsystem is my notebook (noname, P233, 128MB, 4GB HD) running:
FreeBSD 3.4
Perl 5.00503
Mysql 3.22.27
Apache 1.3.9 with mod_ssl
installation problems:
after doing a makecat of the shop "karl" based on simple with activating mysql
i started minivend. give the error message wrong locale de_DE and if commenting
out i got the same for fr_FR. note that only the locale without LC_TYPE
produced the error. after commenting out everything mv started without any
problems and created the tables in the database. i then changed fr_FR to_TYPE
fr_FR and keeped de_DE with LC_TYPE and it worked.
running the demo:
when playing with the demoshop (client is Netscape 4.7us under FreeBSD) it
looks mostly ok. there is one strange point (i don´ accept cookies opn this
machine). when klicking continue shopping on the basket page i get a search
result without displying the item right. itt looks like that the right number
of products is displayed, but the fields are displayed empty (eg. no text,
price..).
i havn´ had to musch to play, but what i have seen looks really great.
can´tawait the release of 4.0.

****** message to minivend-users from "Gideon van Gelder" <gideon@swingmaster.nl> ******
Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a nice christmas.
I've got news for Mike:
this:
[set-cookie name="MV_PASSWORD" set=""] doesn't work with Netscape 4.0
It works fine for IE 5, but Netscape just keeps loggin me in automatically,
I can't shut it up.
BTW: [set-cookie name="MV_USERNAME" set=""] doesn't work for both, it just
stays in the cookie file, but this is not as big a problem as the
mv_password
staying in since that is the one that decides the login.
Is this a bug or am I just stupid as always ?
Thanks,
- -Gideon

When MiniVend had this same type of feature in February 1996, was it
released on CPAN already ? Was the code accessible and downloadable
from that time on ?

Works for me on Linux. Try setting an expire date.

I am getting "No items in your basket" on the checkout page and have the
following secure server configuration on a site (MV3.14-4).
Variable SERVER_NAME www.mydomain.com
Variable CGI_URL /cgi-bin/simple
Variable SECURE_SERVER https://www.mysecure.com/mydomain
No combination I have tried of DomainTail, IpHead, WideOpen seems to work.
I am wondering whether Minivend doesn't like the extra '/' in the secure
server name or CGI URL (i.e. www.mysecure.com/mydomain or
/mydomain/cgi-bin/simple. I recall that I got this working on another
server which had a /cgi-mydomain/simple CGI URL.
There is nothing in the log files, so I am not where to start looking.
Would adding extra logging code to minivend help see what's going wrong?
Thanks.

****** message to minivend-users from Kareef Huggins <Xellos@netzero.net> ******
I can't seem to figure this out for the life of me...
I ran the makecat program and created a catalog template (i havn't edited the template yet, i just
wan'ted to get it working on the sample template before making any changes)
I configured it to point to the correct locations for the cgi directories (in my case
H:/html/scripts)
and the correct html direcotry (H:/html)
But when i try to access the catalog from the sample store's main page, it says "Object Moved" in
netscape, and gives me a page load error in IE. i couldn't find anything i didn't do in the
documentation, so if anyone can tell me what the Object moved error can posibly mean so i can
trouble shoot the correct part.
I am running Windows 2000 RC2 with its built in ISS service as the webserver.
it is setup to use H:/html/scripts as its script directory, and the catalog.exe file has been
copied to the scripts directory.
If you need more info, let me know. thanks
P.S.: i have almost no perl knowledge, some degree of Server and NT/2000 knowledge, but I do have
programming knowledge, mostly in Visual basic.
I will be running this on a linux box when I finish building the server for it, but in the meantime
wan'ted to get a working windows version, then move it to the linux box later.

Hello!

The strange thing is if you click on any of the product links from this =

Has anybody else run into this problem? Please let me know ASAP!!!

Thank you very much, Mike. I would just want to let you know
once more how wonderful I think MV is, you should get all the credit
in the world !
The expire= didn't help, but I downloaded Netscape 4.7 and everything
works fine with that version. So screw 4.0, I say.
The MV_USERNAME stays persistent in both though, I can't kill it like
I can with the MV_PASSWORD.
And another thing's odd: this works:
[set-cookie name=MV_USERNAME set=""]
[set-cookie name=MV_PASSWORD set=""]
but this:
[set-cookie name=MV_PASSWORD set=""]
[set-cookie name=MV_USERNAME set=""]
doesn't ? Makes sense ?
I'm sorry to bother you with something so stupid.

Subject: [mv] Almost got a nested SQL loop working
****** message to minivend-users from Karl Swisher <kswisher@iolinc.net> ******
Hello,
What I have is a read and a write SQL loop inside of a read SQL loop.
I have all of the below code working but only at different times and not
providing full output all the time. I'm modifying the rectipt.html page inside
of etc. I am writting the order to an external SQL table. Using interpolate=1
in the first or outside loop allows correct results to be returned in the
"newnumber" scratch variable of the second loop. However when this
interpolate=1 is included, the scratch variables cyprodid, cyproducttitle, and
cyproducttype return [sql-param ......] instead of the actual data. When
interpolate=1 is removed from the first SQL loop, the correct data is returned
in the scratch variables of the outside loop but the second SQL loop which is
another read by list loop returns the first field of the outside loop. The
write loop operates correctly each way but is not being feed the correct data
all the time in all the fields desired.
Does anyone know a way I can get both working. I read the previous
archieve question dealing with nesting however that question referred to nesting
within the same table. In my example the outside SQL loop is an
access to a different table than the inside loop. And even though the inside
loop tables are the same, each access is closed with a {/sql] before the next
access.
[item-list]
Outside SQL loop
[sql type=list query="select producttype, producttitle, productid from products where gpalb=[item-field gpalb] " interpolate=1]
[set name="cyprodid"][sql-param productid] [/set]
[set name="cyproducttitle"][sql-param producttitle][/set]
[set name="cyproducttype"][sql-param producttype][/set]
First inside SQL loop, second read SQL loop
[sql type=list query="select max(transdetailno) from newtransdetail_tbl"]
[set name='newnumber' interpolate=1][calc][sql-param transdetailno]+1[/calc][/set]
[/sql]
Second inside SQL loop, a write to table loop.
[sql type=set interpolate=1]
insert into newtransdetail_tbl
values
([scratch newnumber],
'[value mv_order_number]',
'now',
'[value name]',
'[value email]',
'[scratch cyproducttype]-[scratch cyprodid]',
'[scratch cyproducttitle]',
)
[/sql]
[/sql]
[/item-list]
I've got MiniVend 3.14-3. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Instead of maintaining the transaction # your self make that column
auto_increment (mysql) or serial (pgsql, Oracle?)
Then you won't need the 1st inner loop.

Could there be a problem with the Cookies? I recently upgraded to 3.14-4 and I am now seeing that the Netscape Browser and IE5.0 are not saving the cookies to disk upon exiting of the browser application. I remember such problems back in ver-3.4 thru 3.8 which Mike eventually fixed. I'm wondering if these problems have re-surfaced.

Subject: [mv] Cyber Cash Setup help needed
****** message to minivend-users from "K Old" <kevsurf1@hotmail.com> ******
Hello,
In the minivend online help it says to:
Set your final order screen to accept the user form fields
mv_credit_card_number (contains the actual card number),
mv_credit_card_exp_month and mv_credit_card_exp_year (the expiration date
month and year), and the fields containing name, address, city, state, and
country. And you must define the form field mv_cyber_mode on the submitting
form to enable the processing.
The order mode must be final, either by omitting an order profile entirely
or by defining an order profile that contains &final=yes.
I am to do this in order to get it to work with Cyber Cash. This is the
last of many things I have to do to get the Cyber Cash part working.
Can someone explain in detail how I set the final order screen (which file
is that?) to accept the 3 form fields that are above? Also, what is the
syntax to defining the form field mv_cyber_mode?
Thanks,
Kevin

Subject: [mv] Complicated shipping problem (for me)
****** message to minivend-users from "Christopher P. Lindsey" <lindsey@mallorn.com> ******
I have a really complicated shipping situation that I'm having a hard time
dealing with. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on the best
approach.
Here's how it's supposed to work:
Orders to WA, OR, ID, CA, UT, & NV: Ground 15% of total, $5.00 min.
Orders to OR, ID, CA, UT, & NV: 2day air 20% of total, $10.00 min.
Orders to all states except AK: 2day air 30% of total, $10.00 min.
Orders to AK: 2day air 35% of total, $18.00 min.
Orders to British Columbia, Canada: Ground 35% of total, $12.00 min.
Orders to other parts of Canada: Ground 40% of total, $15.00 min.
Orders to Hawaii are not to be allowed, and any order to Canada
requires a Phyto Sanitary Certificate is to the tune of $35 per
$300.00 in the order.
The problem that I'm having is in hiding shipping options that aren't
available for a given state. For example, WA only has ground shipping
as an option. For now I've been setting a really high multiplier in the
hopes that someone won't place an order with $1,000,000 in shipping, but
it's a hack.
I also am not sure how to deal with the no orders to HI bit either. I've
been dealing with it in the same way -- high multipliers. I know that
I can use the 'e' shipping calculation mode to display a message, but
that doesn't prevent someone from placing an order with $0.00 in shipping.
Is there a way to only display certain menus for certain states? Will
I have to set up a state database similar to country.asc?
But the biggest problem that I can't solve is the automatic $35
surcharge/$300 to Canada. What's the best way to deal with that?
I really appreciate any help, and if it's of any interest I'll post
a summary of the final procedure.
Chris

Hi Joachim,
sorry for the delay but I had to install my webserver again, than the
minivend and all other things.
My new dir-struc is
/mvend
/homepages/salesroom/catalogs/simple
and everything works
now I try to make a new catalog in /homepages/salesroom/catalogs/newcat.
The only problem I still have is, if I try to login on Port 7786/mv_admin
I get the prompt for user and passw. and than the error "could not found
DNS"
but I don't believe him. Well, have to figure out what it is.
Thank you

Hello,
I have minivend 3.14-3 and minimate 3.14.0.3 and when I type:
http://domain.com/cgi-bin/catalog_name/config/menu
I get a "500 Internal Server Error"
Any ideas what I should check first. This is usually caused by the path to
perl being set wrong.
I do have minivend working just find here though.
Any help is appreciated.

After having upgraded from MV4.0 alpha4 (which run without any problems)
to alpha8, on starting the server I am getting the error:
Can't locate object method "open_table" via package "Vend::Table::DBI"
at /usr/local/minivend/lib/Vend/Data.pm line 742
The same error is reported for the simple catalog (created under
MV4.0alpha8) and a catalog that I had created under MV4.0alpha4.
Do I require some additional modules?

I am not sure I understand the question. the [data] tag is used to write
to a database. If you specify an existing key and a field, it will write
data to that record/field. I believe if you specify a key that does not
exits, it will create a new record and then write the data to the
specified field.

Subject: [mv] Menubar actions
****** message to minivend-users from Ramsey French <rammjet@mindspring.com> ******
Greetings!
I am about to work on creating a custom menubar for my store. So, I was
studying the demos to understand how they work. But one thing has me
baffled.
In the Simple demo with "noframes", when you click on a menubar button, it
becomes highlighted (color change) and draws a line back to the left nav
bar. And I kind of understand how that is done.
But, in the Simple demo with "frames", the same action does not occur - the
button does not become highlighted and the line doesn't get drawn. Yet,
both demos use the same Menubar code.
Can someone help me with why it doesn't function in frames?
Thanks,
Ramsey French
