This may be a simplistic solution, but minivend handles item sizes 
very well, including different pricing for different sized items 
(e.g. $3 more for XL). Have you tried making your magazines each 
one item number but different sizes? Your customers never have to
see the word "size" unless you put it on the page. Then you can use
the ready-made mechanism to handle different "sizes" of subscriptions. 
Check the docs; size pricing is easy and gives you all the info 
you need in pre-defined variables on the basket and checkout pages.
