Minivend 3.14 and Cybercash 3.2 -- possible to use different servers?

Hi, all.  This is my first post to the list, though I have been lurking here
for a bit.  I've been making good progress getting minivend set up, and am
quite happy with it.  I ran into a bit of a problem when it came time to
link up to Cybercash, though.  Here are the basics:
Cybercash (understandably) insists on being installed on a secure server.
My secure server and my normal server are different.
I don't want to have to put my whole website on the secure server (I would
have to serve every page securely, as the server does not allow non-secure
access, and the performance hit for encryption of every page would be a bit
much).
Minivend is on my normal server, with an extra copy of my cat.cgi on the
secure server to allow service of secure pages.
Cybercash is functional, and Minivend is functional.  I've just had problems
getting them to talk to each other.
So my question is, is there some way to have cybercash on my secure server,
with minivend on my normal server, or do I have to install the whole mess on
my secure server?  Initially I thought I could do something like this:

Variable     CYBER_CONFIGFILE    /dir/on/secure/server/merchant_conf
Variable     CYBER_VERSION       3.2
Variable     CYBER_HOST          address.of.secure.server

But it hasn't worked.  Cybercash returns with the error:
Can't find MCK configuration file -- if I give it the dir on the secure
server.  If I make a local copy of the merchant_conf for it, I either get:
Encryption failed -- if I don't have CYBER_HOST set, or
Bad Request Method -- if I do have CYBER_HOST set.

Anyone know if it is possible to do what I'm attempting here, or do I need
to have everything on one server?  Have I missed something obvious?
Anything important I've forgotten to mention?
