Using .dbf databases question

OK; I think I know enough to ask this question.
I want to set up my catalog to use a database managed by StarOffice. It
uses the output format of products.dbf and contains 107000. lines with
19 fields.
So I should; in the catalog.cfg file

1. disable Database products products.asc TAB
2. enable Database products products.asc dbi:ODBC:TCP/IP localhost 1313
3. alter the necessary data definitions for the field characteristics.

What else?
Where should the products.dbf file be placed? In the
~/catalogs/mycatalog directory?
Thanks.
