Here is how we have done what you have asked. Not by configuring Apache, but by
masking using a frame.

Take your index.html (not the one served by MV) and have a single frame that
calls the cgi-bin catalog url. The address that will then remain in the
browsers' location box will remain as "www.shop.com" no matter where the pages
are actually served from within the catalog. Hope I am being clear enough in
this explanation, an example of this is my MV implementation for Xena-Hercules
at: "http://www.xena-herculescatalog.com"
