shipping calc errors

I am restoring shipping to a MiniVend catalog that has always had it
disabled. All it needs is the same shipping directives that are used by the
art store demo. I have set CustomShipping to "weight", and there is a
"weight" field in the catalog database. I am using the shipping.asc that
comes with the art store demo, with criteria set to "weight". But I am
getting this error in the log:

Custom shipping field 'weight' doesn't exist. Returning 0

I have added [value mv_shipmode], [shipping description] and [data session
ship_message] to the checkout page to try and dubug this, but shipmode and
description are correct, and there is no value for ship_message. Can someone
point me in the right direction to get the shipping working?
