annoying repetitive minimate/security question

i hate to be the annoying repetitive guy but the docs/faqs and mail list
really haven't answered these questions and i have no where else to go, i
swear. so:

problem: want to secure minimate across several catalogs

stuck on: how do i get http authentication to work (for remoteuser/password
directives)? or is the administrator supposed to log in as a minivend user?

i've made a nonempty .access file in the minimate pages dir, and it tells me
i can't access it, but it never sends any http authorization requests....

also, the adminpage directive doesn't seem to do anything.

has anyone succesfully secured minimate?
