A quote from an e-mail from Thawte to me regarding a similar query:
"The strength of encryption is basically anything you want it to be, as
Thawte will sign keys of any size.
I think that you are referring to the session key size, which is limited
to the key size which your browser is able to support ie. 40 or 128 bit
encryption."
