checkout doesn't work, no error messages found ...

Is there somewhere, other then the error.log file in
catalogs/<catalog>/error.log, where errors are logged to?  Slowly getting
somewhere over here, got to the point that I can make an order, see the
basket, hit 'check out' and it goes back to the basket again...

I can't find any error messages anywhere though, so debugging is slightly
difficult :(
