trying to use [data base= etc] and failing!

I'm trying to use the [data ...] flag to increment a database field and then
make the changes to the .asc file associated with the database.

I defined the database in catalog.cfg like this:

Database        articles        articles.asc    TAB
**

The articles.asc file looks like this:

code	coupon	comments
1234	25	blahblah
** (that's TAB delimited, i checked)

On my page I'm trying to doing this : (all on one page? yes.)

[tag flag write]articles[/tag]
[tag touch articles][/tag]
[data base="articles" field="coupon" key="1234" value="1" op="increment"]
[tag export articles][/tag]
**

I'm getting this error :

I saw Ryan Hertz say he got it working (list ark's --
http://www.minivend.com:80/minivend/minivend-list/1999/msg04024.html.)

I see that he was using it inside of an [item-list] tag.  Is that what I need
to do to use this tag, or can you use it outside of the [item-list] thing?
