Update on Cory's Coupons

Dearest Ever-so-helpful List:

(note : these are coupons we are dealing with, they are being freely given
away, to a small group of people, or course.  anyway...)

I've figured out what I *have* to do with the coupons, easy or not.  The
customer (all customers) has a student ID number.  On the billing location page
I'd like to have a student ID field where all users must (required field) put
in their student ID number.  Then I'd like to have minivend check to see if
that ID is in an arbitrary database (<< that's the first thing I don't know how
to do yet) and then, if it is, set a variable that indicates that a discount
should be taken from the order.

The system need not alert the customer to the fact they are getting a discount
until checkout.html where I'd like to display a little graphic / message
congratulating them on having the coupon and assuring them they are getting a
discount.  I'd also like to take the discount from the cost of the products and
the calculate tax and add shipping to that adjusted total.

At some point I'd also like to remove the student's ID from the valid coupon
database.

1) how to check for the ID in the database of coupon allowed ID's
2) how to remove a record from a database using minivend.
