Inventory Tracking (help)

I'm working with a minivend 3.14 database on a Cobalt RaQ. I've pretty much
hacked the demo database to shreds, and now I'm unsure how to fully
implement inventory tracking.

I read (in the mailing list archive) a message from last April describing
how to check on the status of the inventory of a particular item (so I can
add "SOLD OUT" to the page accordingly). What I really need, however, is an
explanation of how to tell minivend to decrement that variable when items
are purchased (and possibly a way to change that variable directly through
the web).

(The site asks for billing and shipping information, then sends the user off
to a credit card verification system outside of our site. I want to put the
inventory decrement on the return page, so when the credit auth comes back
good, the user gets a little receipt page and minivend updates the
inventory. I'm also planning on making a CGI that will allow the db admin to
modify the inventory himself (he sells his products both on the web and in a
retail store) )

Any help would be most appreciated.
