Username does not exist

I've tried everything to get the userDB functions working, but seemingly cannot. I can create a new user using the new_account page, and after submitting I see a message that says, "Hi ! You are logged in as user joebob". However, if I logout and try to log back in again using the username 'joebob', I get a message saying "Username joebob does not exist" (I added the additional username output to that message to check that the form vars were being properly submitted).
I know the calls are getting to the UserDB.pm module, but after that the input seems to disappear. I am using:
minivend 3.14 (complete clean install today)
SunOS 5.5.1
perl, version 5.004_04 built for sun4-solaris
InMemory database.
I think the InMemory database is the key issue. Has anyone else had trouble getting UserDB to work with in-memory databases?
Any help would be most appreciated,
