I've made a few patches to MiniVend 3.12 that do the trick.  They
return error messages like:
   "Missing credit card number"
   "Unknown credit card type"
   "Credit card expiration date has passed"
   "Credit card number fails checksum test"

You'll need to modify these files:
   lib/Vend/ValidCC.pm
   lib/Vend/Interpolate.pm
   bin/minivend
   pages/special/needfield.html

The patches (and zip files containing all four) can be found at:

(Maybe Mike can consider adding to the distribution?)
