userdb: password mismatch

I am just trying to set up a userdb for my shop.

If a user tries to log in with a wrong password (or wants to change it, but
gives a wrong password) the server gives an Internal server Error and the
shopping logfile says:

193.174.90.4 5Vg2M66i:193.174.90.4 - [25/Mai/1999:19:02:13 +0200] ch-test
/cgi-bin/ch-test/process Runtime error: Password mismatch.

(of course :-), but why does it do that and does not behave like the
simple-demo and just displays: Password mismatch?

What am I missing?

PS: the index-page includes a 
    [if session failure]
      [data session failure]
    [/if]
hm - overthinking (?!) this - the nextpage is ord/basket - do I have to
inclode the session-failure part there?
