error from session dbm: syntax error

Demo catalog (simple): When a looged-in user saves his cart in the
basket.html under a nickname and saves the cart contents into the shelf
I get a Server Error page. The session db seems to be corrupted.
The error in the catalog error.log is: ... from session dbm: syntax
error at (eval 76) line 28, near "'{'May"
It appears that the { in the session.gdbm just in front of the value of
the nickname (in this instance 'May-25-1999')is in single quotes. The
single quotes around the { dont make any sense to me and seem to be
causing the problem.
I have to delete the session.gdbm file to recover.
I am using MV 3.12. I have deleted the original demo catalog and
reinstalled - with the same effect. At minivend.com the same problem
does not occur.
Any hints on how to fix or avoid this problem?
