Re : New MiniVend user and advice needed

You should use it, mostly because it is the best cgi-database-interface I've found outside of writing one yourself.  Is it complicated, yes.  Remember, to be a good e-commerce tech you first need to be an exceptional network-administrator, a seasoned database administrator (of a relational database system), and lastly an experienced web administrator.  People who try to use this product without having the above credentials find the learning curve very steep and usually need much help.  The people that make it have recieved a very in-depth experience into the above subjects which make them (whether they realize it or not) some of the "best of the breed" internet-application developers.  Don't think you can come in and immediately set up a highly customized site without learning something.  I spent 4 months putting up my first site, and I was already an accomplished programmer when I started.  After setting it up though, I've become much, much more accomplished in the internet.

Should you attempt it?  Definately.  Is it difficult?  Yes, but that's why e-commerce professionals make the big bucks.  Are we going to help you?  Positively, there isn't a single person, to include Birgitte and the author Mike Heins that hasn't asked for some help at some point.  This group is unique in that, while you may be raked over the coals for a question, it will always be answered.  The fact is, you won't find a more varied range of experience or response time for a cheaper price in any other type of e-commerce customer support.

Do you need to be able to program Perl in order to use Minivend?  NO, I've set up three extremely varied sites that took advantage of some very powerful features of minivend, and I haven't had to write a single line of code yet.  However, until you read and understand Interpolate.pm, you may never truly understand Minivend works.

Can you be support on many different OS's?  Yup, from NT, to Linux, to Win'95 to Unix, there are people around who have Minivend on just about every platform you can think of.

my 2 cents...

Hi, all minivend users

I have been following this minivend-list for a while but yet to decide if I
should use this shopping cart software.

I have been searching for a good free shopping cart software for my
e-commecrce site. After trying out PerlShop and Redicart ( which has taken a
lot of my time studying the script and installation), I found that this
software are not as powerful as I thought. Some of the feature like "seach
machine" and "customer account sign-up" are not there.
Some one from newslist introduced minivend to me but I found the
documentation to be a bit complicated. I need some advice from you guys.
Should I go ahead with minivend? Is it worth to spend time studying it? I
guess you all agree with me when I say the you need to spend a lot of time
on the shopping cart software before it really works accordingly.

Thanks

Regards,
Michael
