Thank you Ryan, your suggestion go me closest to fixing this problem. After attempting many long and drawn out "fixes", I finally decided to apply "Ocham's Razor". I went back to the most basic minivending and it was there I found the answer. Instead of using the [page scan] tag which does not allow another tag to be nested within it, I called the function from an <href>. But enough talking, here is the solution:
bad code:
[page scan se=OWED[data session username]/mp=srch_profile]
Fixed code:
<A HREF="/cgi-bin/simple.exe/scan/mp=0/se=OWED[data session username]/tf=category">
Thanks...

This looks like a typo above - wouldn't you want to have sf=OWED/sw=[data
session username]/mp=srch_profile?
