They're not directly:

In the session db miscellaneous variables are saved, so they can be recalled
in that particular session. After the session expires (1 day by default)
it's not usable anymore and safe for delete.

However, if you let users save their session, it won't expire and the user
would want to have access to his session, with the saved variables already
there, so he won't have to enter them again.
If you would delete the session database in this case, such "saved sessions"
would be deleted.
