Yes, take a look at how this is accomplished by passing a search string directly to the simple.exe via the address bar.
http://your.site.com/simple.exe/scan/mp=0/se=STORE/tf=category
This can be passed from external pages. In fact, I use this instead of the usual "splash" screen that is included with 3.12 to build the gateway to my site.
