inventory update bet. remote and local databases...

Hello, 

The site concerned was created using minivend 2.x arround 2 yrs back.
It was then made to run on mvend 3 later by modifications. It uses 
products.asc/gdbm to store the database. It is frames based and 
"one click catagory search" and "find and order" kind of srch and 
ordering is currently implemented. 

This site is maintained by a retail bookshop,which is now in the process
of automated inventory and billing. Once that is completed (which will soon 
be completed), the site should ideally link the inventory of the bookshop and 
allow ordering only if the book is in stock. But then the inventory should
be modified every day to account for the sale made in the bookshop.

Do I have to upgrade to 3.12 or I can again make modifications in 
the current mvend 3 setup and achieve the reqd things?

Exactly what will be the the things I need to maintain the inventory 
online? Will this be very complex?

Do I need to now use msql/mysql etc or can I take care of the added 
requirements using the products.asc file?
