We have one shop on a P166 with 64M of memory running RH Linux 5.0,
MiniVend 3.11. In the shop there is about 1500 producs with images, all
data is stored in a MySQL DB (images on the disk as image files, 13 Megs of
them). Shop gets 8000-10000 hits a day and is running fine, the pages start
to display just about right away. In the same machine we have six other
virtual web sites (no shops there though), it is mail server (SMTP and
POP3) for 30 users and on top of that the machine is crunching RC5 keys at
the average rate of 344000 keys/second (see www.distributed.net for more
info about that). So I don't think the machine is too weak for the simple
catalog (or a real shop for that matter). There must be something else that
is slowing down the MiniVend. I noticed that expiring the session database
every night boosted the shop a bit.
