[sort] with [scratch]?

Is it possible to sort based on the value of a scratch variable? It doesn't seem to be working for me when I try this:
[set sortby]name[/set]
[tag each products]
[sort:[scratch sortby]]
...display code...
[/tag]
Has anyone gotten this to work?
