Locking out 'possible bad robot'

I think I'm going for a record number of posts to the list today.

Is anyone utilizing the LockoutCommand directive to thwart crazed robots?
I have an Apache-style robots.txt file that bans 'bots from /cgi-bin/* but
apparently that doesn't always get honored.

I know next-to nothing about how to lock out an IP or it's consequences.
Anyobdy have an insight on this issue?
