You definitely do not need root access to set up minivend. You would need
root access to create a new user for minivend, from then on normal user
permissions are quite sufficient. Many installation problems reported on
the list come from people who installed parts of minivend running as root,
and then had problems with their permissions.
As to the installation itself, transferring the minivend dir tree to your
unix machine may introduce many problems. Transfer the .tar.gz file to the
unix machine and then do
gunzip minivend*.tar.gz
tar -xf minivend*.tar
This will produce a directory where you will find instruction what to do next.
