PIPE delimited products.asc problem, and form data advice requested

Hi

Wondered if anyone could please help me with two setup problems on 3.11:

1.	We need to have the products.asc database in PIPE format because it has
all sorts of strange stuff in it - Arabic characters, tabs etc. But to get
it to work, it appears we have to set in catalog.cfg

Delimiter PIPE.

And when we do that, the shipping.asc database stops being seen - nothing
appears in the popup shipping box on the checkout form (actually $0.00
appears). We've tried setting

Database products products.asc PIPE

and tried 5 instead of PIPE, but these things seem to make no difference.

 shipping.asc is seen when Delimiter is TAB, and products.asc PIPE is then
not seen, and vice versa. What is the setup we need to be able to use this
PIPE-delimited products.asc database?

2.	We cannot find out how we should be reading the data from a hidden field
on a form. For instance, we want to send from the search form a hidden field

<INPUT type="hidden" name="my_work" value="new_project">

and then read that value back on the next form. What's the way to do this?
Is it perl, and if so what's the code? Or does it become readable by [value]
or [scratch] or something? Or should we use some other way to send this data
from a form (as opposed to a link)?

Any help much appreciated.
