Newbie: If loops and prices

I asked a similar question earlier, and though I hoped to find the
answer in the archives, I'm hoping someone here can help. In my
database, certain items can be marked as being negotiable in pricing.
 (This is all latest beta stuff)

The following piece of code works fine in the results page:

[search-list]
	Our Price: [if-field price][item-price][else]Offer[/else][/if-field]
[/search-list]


On the Index page (ripped from Simple) there's:

[loop arg="[random]"]
	Our Price: [loop-price]
[/loop]

But I can't seem to make the lines from the results page to work the
same on the index page:

[loop arg="[random]"]
	Our Price: [if loop-field price][loop-price][else]Offer[/else][/if]
[/loop]

I've tried variation after variation, but I can't seem to grasp how and
why the same field is referred to in different ways. Shouldn't this be
the same everywhere? This has been keeping me busy for a couple of days.
