Downloading non-html files from the catalog

Fellow MV'ers:

Is it possible to have users open a non-html file from a catalog page without 
losing the session-id (shopping basket, etal)? 

The [page] tag works great for html files but doesn't seem to like other 
extensions like .pdf .xls etc.  It would really be helpful for certain products to 
show samples in another format. But if you lose the shoppers context in the 
process ... that's no good.
