creating unique multiple indexes

I was wondering how to create multiple indexes for a product database.
I have tried the following in catalog.cfg:
    Database products INDEX category artist

or
    Database products INDEX category
    Database products INDEX artist

They don't seem to create a new index or add a field to the category
index.

What I really want is a unique artist name index from the products
database.

I.E. Van Gogh has many products but only shows up once in the index?

I would like to list out the artists, but not search the whole database
because it is WAY to slow.
