have you tried:
[data base="prodindex" field="title" key="[product-code]"]

I don't know if you also need interpolate=1 at the end. That may be why
adding ".2" made it work. Check how you are matching in your search.

Maybe you should add a field "format" to products.asc that is set to
tape,cd,record and then use either coordinated searches or return unique
to get what you want. Then you could get rid of prodindex.asc. It seems a
shame to duplicate everything.
