RE: browser check (Internet Explorer 3.x)
****** message to minivend-users from "Sid MacLeod" <sid@sidzone.net> ******
:> I've had a few customers complain about my site crashing
:their web browsers and
:> sometimes their computers. All of them are using MS
:Internet Explorer version
:> 3.x. I suspect one of 2 culprits:
:> something that minivend is doing
:> or possibly some bad javascript code
~&~>IE 3.x was not compatible with *anything*, even IE4, Netscape, or AOL3.x(which ran a basically
IE3 hybrid). At the time, MS was trying to force *their* technology over the Netscape/Sun Java
standard, which backfired, thank god. Java is very versatile, and now that MS is on the Java
bandwagon(somewhat), NOT incorporating Java into a website is a big mistake. Let the browser do the
work, not *your* machine. IE4 standalone browser(w/o the crappy mail app Outlook Express, and other
BS) is not that large a file, is FREE, and handles most java fairly well. Have these folks go out
and get themselves a free upgrade. I've been running the Beta of IE5 and MSOffice2000 from the
jump, and the future of Java looks solid. For now...........
:I had the same problem using linux 2.0.* with SSL version of Apache
:server. The Apache SSL was not compatible with MSIE 3.* (or the other
:way around.) and had to upgrade my Apache server to the newest version.
~&~> There are more customers in the future, than there has been in the past. Upgrading any client
or server Internet application is an improvement, and should be treated as such. Live in the
future, not in the past. (Just *don't* take away my DOS games!)
:The best way to tell what the problem is, is to duplicate it yourself..
:Go get IE 3, load it try it.
~&~>This is usually *very* good advice for people that do what we do, but I wouldn't wish IE3 on my
worst enemy, let alone a customer, or someone I actually *liked*! IE3 will add more headaches than
it solves.
~&~> I use what works, because it works; and until it stops working, I use it. Or change
it....................
