Field Contents reverting to MV_USERNAME?

Does anyone know or have any experience as to why to fields, 'company'
for the shipping book, and 'b_company' for the accounts book, revert to
the contents of mv_username?  What is strange is that when I'm capturing
the customer data, is looks good on the screens but the moment I save
and move to the basket, MV is not saving the field even though
explicitly declared on the userdb function call AND the field is
incorrect when the processing proceeds from the basket to checkout.
I've confirmed field name user and I'm clean, so I'm equally lost...

Anyone ever heard of this???
