Why does

[if [item-field price] eq "a.A."]
  Preis<br>auf<br>Anfrage<br>
  [else][item-price]<br>[/else]
[/if]

not work? 

My customer wants to insert a.A. (auf Anfrage / on request) into the
price-field if the price changes too often. 
We even tried to insert a 0 into the price field and compare it with 

[if [item-field price] == 0]
[/if]
but this did not work either...

Any ideas?
