Searches taking too long.
****** message to minivend-users from Nobumochi Furukawa <"director@gigastore.com, director@aavideo.com, webmaster"@pallas-records.com> ******
I appreciate all the work Mike and others are putting into Minivend to
make searches faster. For now, I would like some input as to what
others maybe using for a large catalog.
My products.asc contains 170,000 lines of 8 categories for a CD store.
Using the text search mode, it returns results faster than using glimpse
if the artist has many titles. (More than 80 or so.) But it uses too
much CPU resource and searches are taking too long that I think
customers sinply click "STOP" during the search.
So, I have switched to glimpse using indexing of 5000 lines per file.
For artists with very few titles or for uncommon names, the search works
great. But for artist, such as "Mozart," the search takes 70 seconds.
I understand that much of this time is being used to sort and build the
results page, but this is too long for a CD store.
I have tried SQL, but it was also too slow. I would appreciate input
from anyone who is using a large catalog and have managed to speed up
the search process.
