Thanks to all of you who responded to my initial desperate plea for help.
I now know why I couldn't make sense of the documentation - I had file
permissions set wrong in the catalog directory! I'm not quite the bonehead
that sounds like, though - i did check permissions, but never at the right
time. The default permissions for the directory denied group write, so
every time I modified ( and saved under a different name) the products.asc
file, the permissions would change. When I copied the new file over
products.asc, the default permissions would be inherited.

Drat.

I can only say that knowing that a internal server error is NOT minivend's
normal response to bad or missing data makes experimenting a lot more
productive.
