using INET to communicate between seperate machines

Hello!

 I read the related on docs on how Minivend can communicate with other
minivend machines using the INET protocol (search on "INET" on
http://www.minivend.com/ to follow in my footsteps). 
 However, I can't envision how the data is transmitted. Anybody have an
example or another pointer? My own problem is that I have all the
information for a full shopping cart, and I want to pass it to a
seperate, secure machine on the LAN to check out.
