userdb new_account function

A quick and rather basic question, but when you call the new_account
function in userdb, does it automatically 'login' because I'm not seeing
the session value for username defined after the call and when I
subsequent calls to set_shipping, etc, I get:
    There is no row with index '""'
which appears to confirm that new_account didn't infact connect though
the record was written to userdb.gdbm...

If it doesn't automatically 'login,' shouldn't it?  and if not, why
wouldn't you want it to?
