[value] tag

I have set up a catalog and am trying to write a page that will let the
admin enter info into the database.

When I write my form, I have the action set for:
/cgi-bin/mvend/addproduct.html

All of my <input> tags are valid names, but when I use the [value] tag on
the addproduct.html page, nothing comes through.

For example:

<form action=/cgi-bin/mvend/addproduct.html>
<input name=product>
</form>

The value does not come through when I put [value product] on the
addproduct.html page.

Does anybody have some helpful advice?  Am I missing something?
